Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a 2017 film directed James Gunn. It was produced by Kevin Feige with James Gunn writing the screenplay based the Marvel comic books, Guardians of the Galaxy created by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a sequel to the original Guardians of the Galaxy released in 2014 and features an ensemble cast of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Michael Rooker, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris Sullivan, Sean Gunn, Sylvester Stallone and Kurt Russell.

The storyline is set after the Guardians saved Xandar from Ronan’s wrath and are now recognised as heroes. The team travel throughout the cosmos as they help their leader Peter Quill learn more about his mysterious parentage. Along the way, old foes turn to allies and betrayal is blooming. The Guardians find that they are up against a devastating new menace who is out to rule the galaxy.

Principle photography was completed at Pinewood Atlanta Studios in Fayette County, Georgia where they used all 18 stages. James Gunn said the sequel required more sets as “our sets are very large, even though a lot of the film is CGI. I like to have as many practical sets as we can and make the environments as real as possible so it balances out the CGI elements”. Additional filming for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 took place in Cartersville, Georgia and a state park north of Portland, Oregon. The Georgia International Convention Centre being used as a additional soundstage. This was due to pre-production for Spider-Man: Homecoming as they occupied several soundstages at Pinewood Atlanta Studios.

When Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was released it received positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes it holds a rating of 82% with the consensus says “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s action-packed plot, dazzling visuals, and irreverent humour add up to a sequel that’s almost as fun — if not quite as thrillingly fresh — as its predecessor”.

Brian Tallerico of gave the film three out of four stars and says “The underrated Saldana turns Gamora into the most practical member of the group; Bautista gets as many big laughs as any MCU character playing the big guy with no social filter; Cooper does great voice work as he finds how Rocket disguises insecurity with self-sabotage; even Gillan and Rooker take characters who could have felt merely supporting and give them surprising depth”.

Commercially, much like the first Guardians film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was a huge financial success. Produced on an estimated production budget of $200m, it took $146,510,104 in US box office takings from its opening weekend. The film achieved total worldwide box office receipts of $817,495,020 making it the highest grossing film in the Guardians series so far.

There are plans for a sequel and James Gunn confirmed in April 2017 that he would return to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3. At this time there are no known plot details or confirmed release date.
