Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (also know as Star Wars: Rogue One) is a 2016 film directed by Gareth Edwards and was produced by Kathleen Kennedy, Allison Shearmur and Simon Emanuel. The screenplay was written by Chris Weitz and Tony Gilroy based on the characters created by George Lucas and a story by John Knoll and Gary Whitta. It is the first installment of the Star Wars anthology series and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, Riz Ahmed, Jiang Wen, and Forest Whitaker.

The storyline is set after the events of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith and immediately prior to the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. When all looks lost for the Rebellion against the Empire as they learn of the existence of a new super weapon, the Death Star. Once a possible weakness in its construction is uncovered, the Rebel Alliance must set out on a desperate mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. The future of the entire galaxy now rests upon its success.

Principal photography on Rogue One began at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire on 8th August 2015. Much of the other filming was completed at or near Pinewood Studios at Buckinghamshire, UK where huge sets were built to complement scenes filmed elsewhere in the world.

When Rogue One was released it received generally positive reviews from the critics with praise for its acting, action sequences, musical score, darker tone and visual effects. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently holds a rating of 84% with the general consensus being, “Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground — and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise”. The New York Times wrote, “All the pieces are there, in other words, like Lego figures in a box. The problem is that the filmmakers haven’t really bothered to think of anything very interesting to do with them. A couple of 9-year-olds on a screen-free rainy afternoon would come up with better adventures, and probably also better dialogue”. George Lucas was reported to have enjoyed the film more than The Force Awakens; upon hearing this, Gareth Edwards said, “I can die happy now”.

Commercially, Rogue One was a huge box office success. It became the fourth Disney film in 2016 to earn $1 billion at the box offices, joining Captain America: Civil War, Zootopia and Finding Dory. It became the second-highest-grossing film of 2016 and the third Star Wars film to gross over $1 billion worldwide, following The Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens. Rogue One made $155.1 million in its opening weekend at the box office and went on to take $532.2 million at the US box office and $523.8 million worldwide.
